Who doesn’t want big, bold lashes to highlight their gorgeous eyes? Sometimes, to get that look, mascara isn’t enough. Sometimes to get that long, luscious look you want, you need lash extensions.
But the key to good lash extensions is to have a good base of eyelashes and take care of your natural eyelashes. One of the ways to take care of your natural lashes is to remove your extensions properly.
Here’s how to remove eyelash extensions to do minimal damage to your natural lashes.
Wash Your Face Thoroughly
You’ll want to start by thoroughly washing your face. Use your standard cleanser and makeup remover to get rid of any mascara or eye makeup. You want to make sure your eye area is clean.
Avoid scrubbing that may irritate. And do not pull on the lash extensions as that may cause damage to your natural eyelashes.
Loosen It With Steam
Next, you’ll want to loosen the eyelash extension glue by using steam. Heat a bowl of water and place your face over it. You can cover your head with a towel to keep the steam in but do not place your face in the water to avoid burns.
Keep this position for a few minutes to help loosen the bond that holds the extensions to your eyelashes.
Warm Up the Oil
After using steam, you’ll want to fill a small bowl with oil and warm it up. You can use coconut oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, or castor oil. Be cautious of any allergies or irritation you might have.
Ensure that the oil is not too hot, so you don’t burn your eye area. You only need the oil to be mildly warm.
Soak Cotton Pads in Oil
Soak one or two cotton pads in the warm bowl of oil. Once they’ve soaked up the oil, place the cotton pad over the lashes. Keep the pad on your eye for five to ten minutes or until the cotton pad loses the heat.
Be sure to let the oil sit on the extensions for a few minutes.
Gently Remove the Extensions
After swiping the oil across your lash line, you should see a few extensions falling off onto the cotton pad. Avoid doing damage by carefully and lightly swiping at your natural eyelashes.
However, if the extensions do not come off with the oil, do not pull them off. Pulling can damage your natural eyelashes. Any extensions that do not come off will need to be removed by a professional.
Don’t Use Professional Removers at Home
It may seem tempting to use professional eyelash extension removers at home when the oil does not work. However, there is a reason why these are professionals.
These removers are formulated with glue-dissolving materials that require training to use. You can do damage to your eye if you misuse these removers.
