Riding is supposed to be fun, and sometimes the overbearing heat can suck the fun right out of it. Not only can the heat be a drag, but it can also be dangerous for you and your horse.
Fortunately, there is some great equestrian clothing designed to help beat the heat and make your time in the saddle more enjoyable. So read on to learn some tips and tricks for you and your buddy to stay comfortable and safe in the hottest weather.
General Hot Weather Basics
When dressing for hot weather there are a few general rules of thumb to stick to. Opt for light-colored clothing. Dark clothing will absorb more heat from the sun’s rays, while light colors reflect the light, keeping you cooler.
In your clothing choice, chose fabrics that wick moisture from the body. Cotton is the most common fabric for clothing, and usually the most comfortable. It’s breathable, but it absorbs water like a sponge and could make you feel damp and hot all day.
Fabrics that are specifically designed to cool you down draw sweat away from your body. This evaporative process acts like your body’s own air conditioner.
And you already know this, but stay hydrated!
Hot Weather Pants
Riding pants offer protection for your legs and your rear-end. But standard breeches and jodhpurs are typically not the most comfortable to wear during the hotter months of summer.
Recently, riding tights and leggings have become more popular amongst the equestrian community. These are great hot weather options because they are lightweight and wick moisture away from your body, keeping you cool. Look for leggings made of CoolMax fabric or tights that have some cotton in them.
Hot Weather Shirts
There is a little bit more flexibility when it comes to shirt choice for equestrian activities. You can go with the tank top to keep cool, or perhaps a standard polo shirt or t-shirt. The only problem with those is that they leave you exposed to the sun.
Long sleeve shirts made from technical fabric, even in summer, will offer sun protection and keep you cool. The fibers used in technical fabric have wicking properties that draw moisture away from your skin creating a cooling effect.
While technical fabrics can cost a little more upfront, they will save you from painful sunburns and keep you in the saddle longer during the heat of the day.
Hot Weather Gear for Your Horse
Your horse needs help staying cool in the summer, too. Seek out shade and provide access to cool clean water. Wipe your horse down with water to help them stay cool.
In the hottest parts of the day in the barn, your horse will benefit from airflow. Taking them on a slow walk is a good idea. After some intense riding, these boots will help draw heat from the joints and muscles ensuring they stay tight.
The Best Equestrian Clothing for Hot Weather
When selecting equestrian clothing for hot weather there are a few things to keep in mind. Go for lightweight, light-colored fabrics made of breathable, moisture-wicking materials. Don’t forget about your horse’s needs and dress them appropriately for the weather, too.
