Ah! Fresh air, the crackle of the campfire, and the smell of roasting marshmallows. What does all that make you think of?
Camping, of course!
Camping is an excellent way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. But having all the right stuff on hand can be a challenge.
Instead, check out these 7 great camping hacks. Next time you’re out in the woods and realize you forgot something important, you’ll know what to do!
1. Light up Doritos
Imagine this. You’re ready to lay your campfire, but then realize you left the fire starter stick at home.
Or maybe you left it behind on purpose, planning to use leaves or grass to get your fire going. The only problem is…everything’s wet.
What do you do?
Look through your snacks. Dense, oily corn chips like Doritos or Fritos light easily and burn a long time. It’s the perfect way to get your fire started.
2. Sled Your Stuff Around
Isn’t it annoying all the trips you have to make back and forth from the campsite to your car? Pile things on a plastic sled and slide them around instead.
Sleds might be built for the snow, but they slide just as easily over grass, sand, and even gravel!
3. DIY Lantern
It’s nice to have a bit of extra light, but lanterns can be a pain to haul around. Fill a clear plastic water bottle with water. Then strap a headlamp to it with the light pointing inward. Instant illumination!
4. Clothes as a Pillow
Pillow take up a lot of space and aren’t extremely necessary to the camping experience. But they are necessary if you don’t want to have a stiff neck in the morning.
Fix your problem by bringing along an empty pillowcase instead. Stuff in some clothes you’re not using for a comfy pillow.
5. Pack a Swag Instead of a Tent
Tents can be bulky and you don’t need all that extra overhead space. You’ll also have to bring along a separate mattress if you don’t want a backache in the morning.
Go for a swag instead of a tent. A swag is roomy without being too big and has a comfy mattress built in! See more about swags here. It’s one of the most useful camping hacks!
6. PVC Pipe Knife Sheaths
Need to take along some kitchen knives but don’t want anybody to get cut rummaging around for them? Avoid weird injuries by making sheaths for them out of PVC pipe.
Glue the cap on one end of an appropriately sized pipe. Then mark the other cap with an X so you’ll know which end is safe to open. Easy peasy!
7. Duct Tape Holder
Everyone knows that duct tape can fix everything. You should always take some along on a camping trip. But you may not always want to take the whole roll.
Wrap a bit around a water bottle (or another similarly shaped object). Then, you’ll have a little on hand for emergencies, and you’ll be less likely to lose it as well.
